I played an hour or so far, and some thoughts. The producer sucks at telling a story. It isn't so much that the story Sucks, it's the fact that the backstory takes a Major back seat to the action. It's like, btw, here's what happened by explaination of exposition. Now here's a minute of stuff flying by (action) that you can barely follow. Now go ahead and roam around for awhile and let it all sink in.

The battles don't bother me by half. The thing I don't like is that the enemies have very large health pools, and you do piddly damage. At least it's finally over...

I had planned on waiting until I could get this game for maybe $10.  After playing the demo and checking out a bunch of reviews, I don't think I have any interest in playing it at all.  That will make this the first non-MMO Final Fantasy game that I do not buy, which is kind of sad to me.

After playing it for a few hours I have mixed feelings on it.

Graphically the art direction is genuinely good, but at some points it's got PS2 era textures.
Storyline wise it's an epic train wreck. There are so many references to God etc that it reminds me of Xenogear's ham fisted approach to religion.
Gameplay is a mixed bag. I find it quite unforgiving, but the many outfits give you lots of opportunities to find something that works.
Music's pretty good. Voice acting has improved in some areas and gotten worse in others; Lightning's VA seems to have found her stride and actually managed to make me (somewhat) care about her. I can see Hope's VA rolling his eyes in reading the dialogue though.

I can't stand the timer, and what pisses me off a lot after coming from FF14 is that there is no icon to indicate the location of where you have to go for quests. Trying to find out a place on the map to farm items for a quest is so stupidly oldschool I'm amazed it came through playtesting.

Agreed.  And the loading screen looks like a cross between the old Doctor Who end credits and the intro to Casino Royale.

But without a character like Krellian offering some poignancy to the whole thing.

Also: any voice actor that doesn't roll their eyes during this dialogue isn't human.  It's pretty much the Gospel According to Crazy.

I have been revisiting the reviews of previous FFXIII games and it shocks me how relativley high review scores were compared to the overall and established perception of the game by the fans and the journalists. What's funny about these scores is that despite them being so high how come the same publications now bashes FFXIII even the same sites giving 8.0+ ranked it as part of the "dissapoitning lists".

Now I understand there are many types of reviewers and that the ones on podcasts might not be the ones that reviewed the game. Problem is in sites like gametrailers I do not recall anyone from that crew that actually had nice to things to say about FFXIII, so what happened to the reviewer? Did he or she just dissapear never to be seen again?

If what you are observing is that game journalists are a bunch of juvenile hacks who are not worth listening to then... yes.

I kind of feel Lightning will be around the FF conciousness for a very long time. Square-Enix pretty much spent the entire generation telling us she's the coolest character in the franchise and best Female potagonist in the series ever. Plus we know Lightning is going to have a prominent role in KH3 :P

I'm not going to deny that Square pushes her harder than they really should... but apparently in Japan she really is the most popular FF female according to some internet poll, so ???  And while I know internet polls aren't scientific, maybe Square-Enix themselves don't know that.

For Lightning, her story ends here in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, as this game is meant as a finale to this series. But we know that Lightning is an extremely popular character, even when compared to other Final Fantasy characters.

So there is a possibility that Lightning would appear in other future Final Fantasy titles, not as a protagonist, but as a guest character.

I posted this on Reddit, you may be interested in the answers.

Well, I mean, I like Lightning.  I like most of the characters of FF13 actually, barring Hope (and really I'm sort of ambivalent about Vanilla).  It's not her fault the games' storylines were so fucking ridiculous.  That said I still think this "put Lightning in everything!" thing is just like the dumbest of dumb ideas, here.

The King's orders are absolute

I liked Lightning in Dissidia duodecim, does that count? I still haven't even played the first FFXIII despite it being the game I got with my PS3. The guy at Gamestop was even trying to discourage me from getting that game, asking if I was sure I didn't want to pick a different game instead. But yeah, even if she were my favorite character, I wouldn't want to see her in everything SE released for the next decade.

Let's Play Chrono Trigger
Let's Play The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past
Let's Play Final Fantasy VI

The internet poll was from Square Enix right? While the poll could suggest Lightning is the most popular female potagonist question is who answered these polls. I wouldn't be suprised if the long time fans bailed out of the franchise and the ones are left are the ones who still like FFXIII or if these are new fans that are programmed to think Lightning is the mascot of the franchise.

Reminds me of "Cult of Personality's" WWE post in the other section how a generation of new fans have been programmed to think Cena is the best Wrestler because of how hard the WWE pushed Cena down our throats. (Interesting comparisson actually since there are FF fans, not here, that has called Lightning as the "John Cena of Final Fantasy")

Then the other question Lightning Returns sold on 400,000 units in Japan (thats 100,000 more than Vagrant Story which was seen by Japan as a dissapointment in terms of sales), so how many FF fans are really left after this generation?

That's the wrong question. If Squeenix were to make a game that were more like the 1990s era with modern production values people would be all over it like flies on honey. The problem is that Squeenix isn't thinking about the global market or any gamers over the age of 18. Capcom's made the same mistake with Resident Evil when they complained about "poor sales" and how old their fanbase is. Your audience in the West is older than your audience at home. Stop indulging Toriyama's bullshit, bring back a producer who can get a game pushed out on time (Sakaguchi), and stop it with fetisihing that pink haired dullard.

Please? So sick of seeing her all over the place. The only thing I liked about Lightning is her character design. That's it.

Yeah this guy is in denial ... as we haven't said that already

Motomu Toriyama, director for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, was in Singapore recently to promote the latest and last entry in the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy. Siliconera stopped by the launch to catch up with Toriyama.

.....
The Final Fantasy XIII saga comes to a close with this game. But with that said, do you feel that this is absolutely the last tale youâ??ll ever tell within this universe, or do you think you might revisit it in the future? Will we ever see Lightning in a Final Fantasy title again?

For Lightning, her story ends here in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, as this game is meant as a finale to this series. But we know that Lightning is an extremely popular character, even when compared to other Final Fantasy characters.

I really don't care if Toriyama loves Lightning but he should stop speaking on behalf of us fans and what we think about Lightning.
