Strategy
Cactuar is valuable almost entirely because of its 20 AP reward. It has very low HP but extreme Evasion and a strong tendency to flee, so accuracy matters more than raw attack power; Squall is ideal because his normal attacks have perfect Hit. Water is effective if you need elemental damage, but do not waste turns setting up a long spell sequence that gives the Cactuar time to escape. Cactuar Island is therefore one of the fastest GF-ability training areas in the game: use high-Hit attackers, kill immediately, and repeat rather than trying to Draw or farm conventional drops.

Caterchipillar

Strategy
Caterchipillar becomes more troublesome after it has taken significant damage. At lower HP it can use Ultra Waves to damage the party and inflict Berserk, while Sticky Web can add Slow or Stop at higher levels, so dragging the fight out is rarely worthwhile. Fire and Ice both work well, and Sleep can shut it down while you Draw or heal. Its Spider Web drop is especially useful early because it teaches Quistis Ultra Waves, making a short farming stop worthwhile if that Blue Magic is still missing.

Strategy
Chimera attacks through multiple elemental heads, which makes defensive junctioning more valuable than trying to counter one specific spell. Thunder, Wind, and Water are poor offensive choices because the monster absorbs them, while Holy or strong non-elemental damage is reliable. Aqua Breath and its other elemental attacks can punish a party with weak Elem-Def, so carry broad elemental protection when farming them. High-level Chimeras can provide useful magic and materials, but secure control first; the longer all of its heads remain active, the more chances it has to exploit a gap in your defenses.

Strategy
Cockatrice should be treated as a status enemy first and a damage enemy second. It can use Break and other Petrify-related attacks, so ST-Def against Petrify or carrying Soft keeps a bad roll from removing a character from the fight. Wind is highly effective, while Thunder and Poison should be avoided. Cockatrice Pinions and Coral Fragments can be useful refinement materials, which gives the encounter some farming value. If you do not need the drops, use Wind or a quick status such as Sleep and finish it before Break becomes the only thing you remember about the battle.

Strategy
Creeps is a magic-oriented enemy that is better answered with Holy or direct physical damage than with Thunder, which is ineffective. It can contribute status and magical pressure in groups, so Silence is useful if you want to neutralize it while handling a more dangerous partner. Higher-level encounters can also be valuable for spell stocking, but only if the formation is already controlled. In ordinary play, remove Creeps early in mixed groups so its casting does not compound whatever the primary enemy is doing; it is much less threatening once denied repeated turns.

Strategy
Death Claw is a physical attacker that becomes much safer under Darkness or Sleep. Fire works well, and either disabling status gives you enough control to heal, Draw, or Mug before finishing the battle. Sharp Spikes and related drops are useful because they feed into ammunition refinement, so Irvine-focused setups may justify farming them rather than treating Death Claw as ordinary EXP. If you do not need materials, do not let its intimidating appearance dictate a defensive fight: blind it, exploit Fire, and remove it before repeated physical hits become the actual problem.

Strategy
Elastoid is one of the most valuable limited enemies in the game, so the encounter is often more about what you collect than how fast you win. At level 30 or above it can provide Meltdown by Draw, and Mugging can yield a Laser Cannon, which teaches Quistis Homing Laser; outside these Laguna sequences, that item is much harder to obtain. Thunder works well against the machine and Poison is useless. If you need the Laser Cannon, prioritize Mug and consider reloading a nearby save rather than killing the last available Elastoid without it.

Strategy
Elite Soldiers are more important to remove than ordinary Galbadian troops because they can support themselves and their allies with better magic as their level rises. If an Elite Soldier appears alongside weaker troops or machines, focus it first so it has fewer opportunities to buff, heal, or contribute higher-tier spells. Its Draw list can be useful for mid-game magic stock, particularly if you are deliberately building junctions, but the battle itself does not reward stalling. Silence can also simplify encounters if you would rather shut down the support role before attacking.

Elnoyle combines sturdy defenses with some of the best farming rewards in the late game. Tail Needle is always critical, Storm Breath pressures the whole party, and it can Dispel your buffs, so Darkness and strong recovery help if you are fighting normally. Meltdown makes physical damage much more efficient. More importantly, high-level Elnoyles are a primary source of Energy Crystals, which refine into Pulse Ammo for Squall's Lion Heart and into Ultima magic. If farming, Mug or collect crystals deliberately; if not, burst the enemy down before Storm Breath gets repeated opportunities.

Strategy
Esthar Soldiers are not individually dangerous, but their encounters often happen in groups and during sequences where stronger Esthar machines are present. Thunder gives a modest advantage, and the basic elemental spells on their Draw list can be stocked if a Laguna sequence has left a character short on magic. Otherwise, reduce the number of soldiers quickly so they cannot add free turns while you deal with an Elastoid, Gesper, or Cyborg. Their role is mostly pressure through numbers, so focused attacks are more useful than elaborate defensive setup.

Strategy
The Terminator, or Cyborg Esthar Soldier, is tougher than the ordinary Esthar troop and is one of the enemies worth prioritizing in mixed Excavation Site formations. Thunder is effective, while Poison does nothing, so a lightning junction gives Laguna's party a clean advantage during the dream sequences. These enemies do not offer the same valuable rare items as Elastoid, so there is usually little reason to stall on them. Remove the Cyborg first if it is paired with basic soldiers, then use the safer remaining turns to Draw or farm the more rewarding enemy.
