Kalm is a quiet town northeast of Midgar with an inn, houses, shops, and residents who discuss Shinra's influence on the region. The party gathers at the inn while Cloud recounts the Nibelheim incident, making Kalm the frame for one of the game's longest flashback sequences. Outside the story event, the town provides early weapons, armor, items, and materia. Several buildings contain optional treasure and background details. Kalm remains accessible for most of the game and later becomes associated with the Kalm Traveler's reward exchanges.
